The most comprehensive study to date on the global epidemic of obesity, found that the number of people suffering from excessive weight broke the scale, ballooning from 857 million in 1980 to 2.1 billion in 2013.

The highest rates of overweight and obesity were seen in the Middle East and North Africa in 2013; where more than 58% of men and 65% of women, age 20 or older, were found to be either overweight or obese.


Childhood obesity is one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century. The number of overweight or obese infants and young children (aged 0 to 5 years) increased from 32 million in 1990 to over 42 million in 2013.

This escalating trend is due to our fast paced lifestyles, less home cooking, marked nutritional changes, rapid urbanization and globalization. Obesity in childhood is associated with a wide range of serious health complications and an increased risk of premature onset of illnesses, including diabetes and heart disease.


Excessive sugar consumption is the prime suspect for obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, brain health, tooth decay, anxiety, depression, impaired memory and learning skills. 

Much of the sugars consumed today are ‘hidden’ in processed foods. For example, 1 tablespoon of ketchup contains around 4 grams (1 teaspoon) of free sugars. A single can of sugar-sweetened soda contains up to 40 grams (10 teaspoons) of free sugars.


The obesity epidemic has led to a worldwide increase in diabetes, which many are referring to as Diabesity. In the past 32 years the rates have more than doubled in adults between the ages of 20 and 79 and are expected to affect 592 million people by 2035. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) estimated that in 2013 five countries alone had more than 10 million people suffering from diabetes: China, India, the United States of America, Brazil, and the Russian Federation.
