‘Food is more than what you find on your plate. Healthy relationships, regular physical activity, a spiritual practice, and a fulfilling career can fill your soul and satisfy your hunger for life!‘
Joshua Rosenthal, the Founder and Director of the Institute of Integrative Nutrition (IIN), pioneered the term ‘Primary Food’ over 30 years ago but what does it mean? ‘Primary Food’ refers to four areas in our lives, which are, maintaining healthy and loving relationships, incorporating regular energizing exercise routines, having a fulfilling career, and a spiritual practice that invigorates you. All of which, when BALANCED, can far outweigh secondary food. You could be eating all the quinoa and kale in the world, but if you’re not nourishing yourself on a holistic level, you will not feel vibrant. Another example could be if you are in a negative relationship or hating your job then you would be more inclined to stress or anxiety or even depression (hate these terminologies btw) leading to emotional binge eating.
Therefore, it is safe to say that focusing on these aspects is preliminary to ones actual lifestyle and in fact, necessary for committing to being open to dig deep and look at what changes to make. As I personally have strong faith in such an ideology, I have based my wellness coaching on these 4 areas of our lives, which is clearly depicted in ‘Ur Umbrella’ via 4 bright colors; pink represents RELATIONSHIPS, teal represents PHYSICAL ACTIVITY & HEALTH, blue represents SPIRITUALITY & BALANCE, and yellow represents CAREER & FINANCES.
